Coon Rapids, MN Permit to Carry Class
This is a legal class and not a handgun instruction course. If you’re not familiar with the proper safe handling, including shooting of your firearm, or need a refresher, we strongly encourage you to enroll in our Intro to Pistol Class prior to taking the Permit to Carry course.

1. Permit Requirement
- In Minnesota, a permit is required to carry a handgun in public, whether concealed or openly. This is known as a “Permit to Carry a Pistol” (PTC).
- There is no requirement for the firearm to be concealed; open carry is allowed with a valid permit.
2. Eligibility Criteria
To obtain a permit, applicants must meet several requirements:- Be at least 21 years old.
- Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
- Not be prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
- Complete an approved firearms training course within the past 12 months.
3. Application Process
- Applications must be submitted to the sheriff’s office in the county of residence.
- The applicant must provide a completed application form, proof of training, a photo ID, and the required fee.
- The sheriff has 30 days to process the application and conduct background checks.
4. Validity and Renewal
- Permits are valid for five years and can be renewed.
- Renewal requires completing another approved training course and submitting the renewal application before the permit expires.
5. Reciprocity
- Minnesota recognizes permits from certain other states, and residents of those states can carry in Minnesota as long as they abide by Minnesota’s laws.
- However, permit holders from other states should check for reciprocity agreements, as these can change.
6. Restrictions and Prohibited Places
Even with a permit, there are certain places where carrying a firearm is prohibited, such as:- Schools and school buses.
- Courthouses and certain government buildings.
- Licensed daycare centers
- State hospitals (psychiatric hospitals)
- Corrections facilities
- Military bases / properties
- Security zones (TSA)
7. Duty to Inform
Minnesota does not have a “duty to inform” law, meaning permit holders are not legally required to inform law enforcement that they are carrying a firearm during a traffic stop or other encounter. However, it is generally considered a good practice to do so.8. Use of Deadly Force
Minnesota follows the “castle doctrine,” allowing the use of deadly force in certain circumstances, such as defending oneself in their home. However, the state does not have a “stand your ground” law, meaning there is a duty to retreat, if possible, before using deadly force in public. These laws can be subject to change, so it’s important to stay informed and consult legal counsel or local authorities for the most current information.Requirements
- Functioning Handgun
- 50 rounds of ammunition

Easily the most modern range in the area. Very friendly staff, state of the art range, and very professionally run, come here and join. They make no assumptions about you and will teach you everything you need to know with their weekly classes, which I have found terrific.

I used to frequent the Burnsville location and have had nothing but good experiences. Once I moved to the north metro I checked this newer location out. I am now a member. It has a huge show floor with loads of products. Staff are friendly, laid back, and professional. My recent FFL transfer was quick and painless. Firearms are available to rent at their range if you are new to shooting or want to try out something new. They also offer classes to teach everything from the basics & safe firearm usage up to advanced shooting techniques. Lisa who works at the range is the best. I'd recommend this shop & range to anyone who is even the slightest bit interested in shooting.

Been coming to The Modern Sportsman for well over a year now. I used to always go to Bills but just had always been lack luster. Everything at Modern is amazing from the staff, to the ranges, pricing on ammo and firearms, available classes, and etc. If you haven't been to Modern before try them out I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Thank you all and Merry Christmas!!

I've had many great experiences here with the staff and shooting range. I've had great conversations with the sales team and making purchases was quick and easy. I would also highly recommend their conceal carry class. Overall best gun shop I've been to in the twin cities.
